The points-based system used by pupils applying for degree courses is likely to be abolished after the move gained support from universities and schools.

I agree entirely with this! The A Level subjects people take are obviously key to assessing the strengths and weaknesses of the individual candidate. The points system disguises attainment in individual subjects. If Universities give students a specific offer based on A Level grades everybody knows where they stand.
