Rise in financial hardship for Hull University students

Rise in financial hardship for Hull University students

The number of Hull University students facing financial hardship increased by 54% over the past four years, its union said.

This highlights a wider issue. Without grants and the forced payment of tuition fees University students are likely to accumulate large debts during their studies. In the midst of a global financial crisis where we talk of bailing out nations that cannot pay what they owe it is surely a dangerous thing to load up our future workforce with crippling debt. For many their degree will be of little use towards future employment and their starting salaries will be woefully inadequate to cope with the cost of living alongside servicing past debt. Perhaps more school leavers should be encouraged to go out and earn rather than go forth and borrow?
