Who are we?

Nevil Chiles:

Nevil Chiles was born in Birmingham in 1970. He attended Haybridge High School in Hagley in the West Midlands, successfully completing 11 'O' Levels and 4 'A' Levels before leaving school in 1988.

After a year in Australia Nevil attended King's College, London where he read History, graduating in 1992. In the mid 1990s Nevil worked and travelled extensively throughout South East Asia and Australia before becoming involved in education. Nevil worked as a private GCSE tutor to an influential family in Manila in the Philippines before returning to London to take up a full time post in the GCSE Department at Collingham School, Kensington in 1997.

At Collingham Nevil taught History and English at both GCSE and A Level. In 2002 Nevil left Collingham to set up Kensington & Chelsea Tutors Limited.

Dr. Anna Clark:

Anna Clark was born in Stourbridge in 1972. After leaving Mander Portman Woodward (MPW) in Birmingham in 1991 with 4 'A' Levels she went on to the Royal Free Hospital School of Medicine to study Medicine. She qualified as a doctor in 1999 and became a member of the Royal College of General Practitioners in 2001. Despite her involvement in Kensington & Chelsea Tutors she continues to work as a GP.

FACE TO FACE with Marie Bondulich, private tutor

An interview with Marie Bondulich about being a private tutor.

How long have you been a private tutor? Since May 2010 and I've been attached to K&C and Webtutornet since early 2012.

Why did you decide to become a private tutor?
I started tutoring my partner's little brother back in 2010 because he was struggling with his sciences and particularly his maths. I spent a lot of weekends tutoring and I thoroughly enjoyed it and because he got A's and B's when he was predicted D's. I thought it would be a great idea to go into private tutoring and apply my teaching abilities on a larger scale.

What subjects and age groups do you focus on?
I offer tutoring for the following subjects: German (GCSE/IGCSE and A LEVEL), Spanish (GCSE/IGCSE and A LEVEL), Maths (any level up to GCSE/IGCSE), Physics (GCSE/IGCSE), Biology (GCSE/IGCSE and A LEVEL) and Chemistry (GCSE/IGCSE and A LEVEL). My main focus and what I enjoy most are GCSE and IGCSE Maths, Chemistry, Biology and Physics and I have had the greatest success with those.

What do you think of the Webtutornet platform for private tuition?
(assuming you've used it!) I think apart from a very few minor technical issues which just need smoothing out I have found it very useful and extremely convenient. It is very simple to use and has some great tools which make it simple and straight forward to use. I particularly enjoy not having to travel to different tutoring locations which can often take me very long. I have no doubt that this will become very successful in the future.

What did you do before taking up private tuition?
I have worked in medical research and am currently undertaking a PhD in Neuroscience and tutor on the side.

What are the most rewarding aspects of tutoring?
No doubt the most rewarding aspect is that when you start tutoring a person, who start out struggling, gradually develop an interest and understanding. It's truly inspiring to see how they can engage with a subject when a slightly different perspective is offered. I am quite an interactive tutor and put a lot into pre planning all my lessons and so far I have had massive success with my students. Just recently a girl who was predicted B's and C's, which is by no means bad, achieved 3 A*'s in all the subjects I tutored her in. I will be tutoring her for A levels as well and will hopefully try and help her achieve her dream of getting into medical school and becoming a doctor.

What are your views on the current Government's approach to education?
I believe that the system is in desperate need of an overhaul and the potential of young people needs to be put at the forefront of this. I do believe that there is too much variety in exam boards and it is essential to reduce this variability. I believe that schools should also be more designed for those who do not choose the path of university but instead choose more vocational areas with apprenticeships which should be equally valued.
